What it does not do is give you understanding. Memorizing the steps of an argument is not the same as grasping why the argument holds; storing a formula is not the same as knowing when to use it. The palace is a tool for retention, and retention is the servant of thinking, not a substitute for it. Use it to lock down the raw material — the terms, the sequence, the facts — so your attention is freed up for the harder work of reasoning with them. And because even a well-built memory needs reinforcement, revisit important palaces a few times over spreading days rather than assuming one walk-through is forever.

Build a palace in the evening and you get a quiet bonus: the night does the next stage of the work for you. Memories are stabilized during sleep, as the brain replays and files what it learned that day.
